WHAT IS ULTRASONIC PULSE VELOCITY (UPV) CONCRETE TESTING?

Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) testing is a non-destructive method used to assess the internal condition of concrete. The process involves sending high-frequency sound waves through a concrete element and measuring the time it takes for the pulse to travel between transducers. The speed of the pulse provides insight into the concrete’s density, strength, and uniformity.

UPV testing is widely recognized for its ability to:

THE ULTRASONIC PULSE VELOCITY TEST METHOD

The UPV test is carried out by placing transducers on opposite sides of a concrete element and transmitting a high-frequency sound pulse. The travel time of the pulse is measured, and velocity is calculated using:
upv concrete testing formula
Where: V = Pulse velocity (km/s) L = Distance between transducers (mm) T = Transit time (µs) This calculation allows our accredited team to assess the internal quality of the concrete. Testing is performed in accordance with ASTM C597 and other relevant building code requirements.

Compressive strength is measured by breaking concrete specimens in a compression-testing machine. Compressive strength is calculated from the failure load divided by the cross-sectional area resisting the load and reported in units of pound-force per square inch (psi).

OUR UPV Concrete Testing Process

ASTM Ultrasonic Testing of Concrete

At Specialized Testing, our UPV testing process uses non-destructive ultrasonic equipment to evaluate the internal condition and uniformity of concrete. By transmitting high-frequency sound waves through the structure and measuring their travel time, we can detect variations that indicate cracks, voids, honeycombing, or fire damage. This method provides a fast, reliable assessment of concrete quality without damaging the structure, helping engineers determine strength, durability, and the need for further investigation or repair.

When our technician arrives on-site, the process begins with a thorough visual inspection of the structure to identify areas of concern and determine the most effective testing locations. Based on this assessment, we establish the scope of testing and prepare multiple points where ultrasonic pulse velocity measurements will be taken. During testing, transmitter and receiver sensors are carefully positioned on opposite sides of the concrete surface at precise distances to allow accurate wave transmission. Conductors are used to ensure consistent contact and signal flow, with spacing adjusted to the geometry of the element being tested. Our team uses state-of-the-art ultrasonic equipment operated by highly trained, certified staff to deliver precise and reliable results, ensuring that the concrete’s condition and integrity are properly evaluated before any repair or reuse decisions are made.
