Concrete Slump Testing

Fresh concrete must have the right consistency to perform properly once it sets. At Specialized Testing, our technicians perform concrete slump testing in accordance with ASTM C143 to verify mix workability before placement. This quick on-site test ensures that each pour has the proper moisture content and flow for even placement, finishing, and long-term strength. Slump testing helps confirm that the mix delivered to your job site matches design specifications — protecting the integrity of your slab, foundation, or structural pour.

WHAT IS CONCRETE SLUMP TESTING?

Concrete slump testing is a field quality-control procedure used to measure the workability, consistency, and moisture balance of freshly mixed concrete. The test is performed using a standardized metal cone, which is filled with concrete in three equal layers and each layer is compacted with a steel rod. Once full, the cone is lifted vertically and the resulting drop in height — the “slump” — is measured in inches. A high slump indicates a wetter, more fluid mix that may lead to segregation or reduced strength, while a low slump indicates a dry, stiff mix that may not consolidate properly around reinforcement. The ideal slump range depends on the application, mix design, and placement method. At Specialized Testing, our trained technicians perform field slump tests as part of our comprehensive concrete testing services for slabs, foundations, structural pours, and other critical placements throughout Southern California. All procedures are conducted under ASTM C143 and documented by our ISO/IEC 17025:2017-accredited laboratory (IAS Lab #TL-228), ensuring accurate, verifiable results that meet Los Angeles County and California Building Code standards.

HOW WE DO CONCRETE sLUMP TESTING

When you schedule slump testing with Specialized Testing, here’s exactly what our technician will do to verify your mix is ready to pour.
Our technician verifies mix workability on site in accordance with ASTM C143, documenting results for code-ready reporting.
  1. Prepare the test area
    • Select a clean, flat, non-absorbent surface next to the pour.
    • Confirm the slump cone and tamping rod are clean and dry.
  2. Fill the slump cone
    • Place fresh concrete in three equal layers.
    • Rod each layer with 25 uniform strokes to remove air pockets.
  3. Lift and measure
    • Lift the cone vertically in one smooth motion.
    • Measure the vertical drop to determine the slump (inches).
  4. Record and report
    • Log mix ID, location, temperature, and time per ASTM C143.
  5. Optional strength verification
    • Make and cure cylinders on site per ASTM C31.
    • Test compressive strength in our ISO/IEC 17025:2017 IAS-accredited lab (TL-228) per ASTM C39.
Goal: confirm the delivered mix is workable, compliant, and ready for placement on slabs, footings, and structural pours across Southern California.
