ASTM D3039

Standard Test Method for Tensile Properties of Polymer Matrix Composite Materials

ASTM D3039 is a standard test method for determining the tensile properties of fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composites. This method involves applying a uniaxial force to a composite specimen until it fractures. The test results provide valuable information about the strength and stiffness of the composite material, which is essential for designing and evaluating composite structures.

Specialized Testing is accredited by the International Accreditation Service (IAS) under the ISO/IEC Standard 17025:2017 to perform tests in accordance with the ASTM D3039 standard.

What is ASTM D3039?

The ASTM D3039 test is widely used in the aerospace, automotive, and construction industries to ensure the quality and reliability of composite materials. The test method specifies the testing conditions, specimen preparation, and data analysis procedures, which must be followed to obtain accurate and repeatable results. The test can be performed on both flat and curved specimens, and can be used to evaluate different types of composite materials, including carbon fiber, glass fiber, and aramid fiber composites. The ASTM D3039 test is an important tool for researchers and engineers working with composite materials, as it provides critical information about the mechanical properties of the material. By understanding the tensile strength and modulus of the composite, engineers can design structures that are safe and reliable. Additionally, the test results can

ASTM D3039: Standard Test Method for Tensile Properties of Polymer Matrix Composite Materials

For more than a decade, Specialized Testing has been conducting FRP tensile strength testing in accordance with ASTM D3039 standards.

how we conduct astm d3039 testing

We first start by cataloging the FRP material to be tested. The ASTM D3039 testing standard applies to FRP panels, FRP bars and other composite materials. We then conduct the coupon preparation of the FRP panel. This involves binding a fiberglass-reinforced substrate with an epoxy resin to the lateral terminations of the panel.

Once cured, the panel including the new tabs are precisely cut into equal strips called “coupons”. The coupons are used as the specimens in the test are numbered in preparation for the test.

Next, each coupon is clamped into a load testing machine. The machine essentially stretches or applies load to the specimen until it failures. The test machine measures the maximum tensile load in lbs., the ultimate tensile stress in ksi. and the tensile modulus of elasticity. (Msi).

The Ultimate Tensile Strain is derived as a percentage. After all 5 specimens are tested, the mean, standard deviation and coefficient of variation is calculated.
